This, the second in Big Finish’s Sarah-Jane Smith Adventures, continues in much the same way as the first. Now that the characters have been introduced, it plays out just like a regular episode of a series. The characters are a little more familiar now, so the audio has a “Midsomer Murders” feel about it. Comfortable enough to listen to, not shocking enough to scare you, and not loud enough to startle you.
There’s the discovery of a dead body of an old man in the Thames, which turns out to have the same DNA as that of an 18-year old friend of Josh. Sarah-Jane, feeling a little bored at lying low, is keen to exercise her investigative skills to help her new friend find out what’s going on.
Their trail leads them to the home of reclusive philanthropist Will Butley but, when they’re turned away, Sarah adopts the guise of a cleaner to infiltrate and discover more.
I’m only a short way into this one at the moment, so I’ll add more once I’ve finished it.
After the previous one having been written by Terrance Dicks, this one was written by Barry Letts. The slow-burning storyline that’s carried by a small cast of regular characters makes for easier listening than the fast-paced loud bangs and flashes of some other adventures so, if that’s your thing, these are pretty good to listen to. But they’re not going to get your adrenaline rushing.
