The Prophet in the Rain by Jonathan Barnes is a Sherlock Holmes story set post-war, in 1921, starring Nicholas Briggs and Richard Earl from the Big Finish audio adventures range. It’s offered as a free download to get a taster for the Big Finish box-set of The Sacrifice of Sherlock Holmes, a four-adventure set by Jonathan Barnes.
The story opens with a skeptic attending a seance which convinces said skeptic of the afterlife.
Meanwhile, Holmes and Watson are attending the funeral of Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother. Holmes’ eulogy includes a threat to those who killed Mycroft that he will track them down and defeat them.
I’ve not yet listened to the entire story, but it’s an excellent start. In this story, Holmes is much older than even in The Adventure of the Perfidious Mariner and Nicholas Briggs puts in a lot of effort to convince you that this is Holmes in his latter years.
There have been other adventures in the meantime, but finances preclude me from listening to them at this time. I shan’t be able to continue with the other three stories in this set for the same reason, but I can’t wait to hear the rest of this first one.
