NaNoWriMo2012 draws to a close, and I’ve managed to do 15,000+ words over the target. It’s not the first time I’ve exceeded the NaNo target, but it’s the first time I’ve done it without really knowing where the story was going.
As luck would have it, I now know where the story is going.
It’s odd how that happens. All month I’ve been writing scenes featuring the key characters, trusting that they all knew how they would fit into the story, but I’ve not known what that story is.
On my last 8 mile walk, I’d walked 6 miles and, for some reason, the story came to me. I don’t know what made that happen. It wasn’y the scenery, I’ve seen the Thames Path before often enough. It wasn’t the music, I was listening to Round The Horne (a 1960s BBC radio comedy series) on my phone. It was like someone had opened the gates, and the whole story came flooding out – bursting through the damn and breaking the banks of the river.
I tried to remember it all for when I returned home, and I’m sure I didn’t get it all down, but I now know roughly how it’s all going to fit together. And, you know what? I was right to trust in the characters. They will fit into the story. There’s probably a touch too much waffle that’ll need removing during the editing phase, but they’re all progressing towards their respective goals at the right pace.
Now I know what happens in the story, I just need to find the words to put it all together. I don’t know how that’s going to work out, but it’s going to be a ball!
