I listened to a bit more of Holmes and the Ripper last night. After the “ripper” scene-setting, we’re in the world of Sherlock Holmes and Watson.
Holmes is given a mysterious and vague warning by a psychic before returning to Baker Street and receiving a visit from a bandaged man who rambles incoherently. Holmes picks up on some snippets of information from the male nurses that come to take him back to hospital, and begins to wonder if this incident has something to do with the Ripper murders.
The most notable thing about this story so far is that we’re missing Watson’s typical narration that’s prevalent in Conan Doyle’s work, and in other stories in this range. Instead, we have an eager, almost hyperactive, Watson of the type that wouldn’t go amiss in a modern episode of Sherlock. This style of Watson doesn’t do the story, or Holmes, any favours at all.
I doubt that this will change, so I shall continue listening with one eye on moving towards a later adventure afterwards wherein I hope the status quo will be resumed.
