The second season begins with a good opening to the first of a three-part story. Hartnell continues on fine form. Ian & Barbara have pretty much been reset to how they were at the beginning, and Susan provides her usual array of screams.
The giant props and some of the sets are very well done, although you can’t help but smile at some of Ian’s comments about the giant ants given that they’re soon to meet the Zarbi.
Some of the backgrounds are not so well done (the man’s head, the painted grass, etc), but that’s to be expected due to the budgetary constraints and limited effects ability of a 60s TV series.
Sadly, much of the episode is let down by some very inappropriate music. There we have the TARDIS crew building up the drama and suspense, and then the music is lapped on like some kind of comedy circus. Very unfortunate.
Still, it’s mostly a good start to season two.
Next time … Dangerous Journey
