The final part of Human Resources, and this season, continued from the end of last week’s with the Doctor having made a bit of an error which resulted in the Cybermen gaining access to the platform and threatening to convert everyone they can and kill everyone they can’t – no change there, then.
There isn’t really a lot to add as it was pretty much a continuation of the story with the Doctor learning why he had to protect Lucie all season, the Time Lords getting involved and explaining what the issue was with the planet occupied by the Cylons, etc.
The revelation about Lucie and the Headhunter fell a little flat but it could have been a lot worse. It was good to have the Time Lords back in the story even if it was a bit fannish to incorporate the C.I.A. as though they’re some kind of “Section 31”. Nice also to see “original” Cybermen – from Mondas, not from RTD’s warped fevered imagination of some parallel Earth led by Trigger. Nice also to have ruthless Cybermen, as with the original, not the “handbags at ten paces” type that make jokes with the Daleks that RTD would rather write about.
In short, it was a pretty good ending to the series. I still have part 2 of the opening story to contend with yet as I missed it on the radio and it’s only just been released on CD. Given that Human Resources references some of that episode, it should make things a little clearer.
