30. The Unwilling Warriors

TheUnwillingWarriors1Previously … Strangers in Space

This episode continues in the same style and strength as the opening story.  Having not yet shifted to the Sense Sphere, we still have the rich (and sometimes claustrophobic) setting of the ship – which, through clever filming, looks much bigger than it probably was (probably reusing the studio space that the interior of the TARDIS took up in the previous episode).

The episode is mostly about the reveal of the alien Sensorites, and the sudden manifestation of Susan’s telepathy.  Interesting use of the phrase “we humans” by the Doctor in the very episode that Susan becomes “unearthly” again with the telepathy bit.

TheUnwillingWarriors2The two Sensorites are well done (apart from being able to see the actor’s ears under the masks).  The slight differences in the masks, the physical differences of the actors playing the Sensorites, and their manner provide two quite different aliens.  One is clearly the more submissive of the two, prepared to open a dialogue and talk, while the other is a little more aggressive and pushy – most of which is achieved by the differences the masks and physical stature.
