Doctor Who, season 3 continues …
This episode exists in its original live-action version, and it is so much better to get an understanding of what the story is all about.
As much as the audio is clearer, and seeing the characters, together with the Doctor running about, what the “Chumblies” really look like, what the alien world and the interior of the spaceships look like, nothing can really prevent the story from being a bit naff.
With not much happening in the last episode, this episode is really little more than an infodump from the Rills’ giving a similar but contrary story to what the Drahvins have already told us. Steven tries to escape, but doesn’t get very far, leading to a cliffhanger of him dying in the Drahvins’ airlock.
So, really, three episodes in and the main thing you see is how terribly thin this story is and how very shallow the characters are. How it stood up to four episodes is anyone’s guess.
With the next and final episode being another fan-CGI one, and the story not improving, all I can conclude at this stage is that it’s no great loss that this is one of the missing stories. It’s not a patch on The Time Meddler before it.
Next time … The Exploding Planet
