Doctor Who, season 3 continues …
Finally reaching the end of The Mythmakers, I have to conclude that that it’s not one I could recommend to anyone. The poor-to-horrible audio makes it difficult to understand, and the CGI animation struggles to convey what’s going on.
The story itself didn’t keep my attention at all, something that might have been different if the visual footage had still been available. It sounds like the Doctor was getting involved in some things that were just not realised on-screen.
Vicki’s leaving was poorly handled, with no foreshadowing so it feels like the crew have just left her behind. I’m sure that would cause more stress than it did.
It also feels like they’ve done a pointless switcharound of Katarina for Vicki for no reason whatsoever. Whilst it’ll be amusing for about five minutes to have her think of the Doctor as a god, her complete lack of reaction on being in the TARDIS puts her on a poor footing to start with.
Given we know of Katarina’s fate in hindsight, it would arguably have been better to keep Vicki onboard in her place and have her suffer that fate. Wouldn’t have been nice, but the version we’ve got isn’t either.
Next time … The Nightmare Begins
