EDA1.01 – Domain of the Voord, episodes 2-4

DOMAIN OF THE VOORD

Domain of the Voord continues in the same way as the first episode and played out largely like a typical “First Doctor Adventure”.  We do lose Barbara and the Doctor for the biggest chunk of the middle of the story, and Ian and Susan are separated.  Ian gets thrown in with unwilling slaves, whilst Susan catches the eye of the Voord leader due to his interest in the TARDIS.

As the story progresses, we learn more about the Voord – particularly why it is that they all wear the same black costume, and the identical masks.  There’s a good reason for it, and it wasn’t just to survive the acid of Marinus’ seas on the TV.

The final episode sees the return of the Doctor and Barbara (who still sounds exactly like all of Carole Ann Ford’s other voices, so you still don’t know who’s talking when you hear her voice – conversations between Barbara and Susan with Carole Ann Ford adding in the narration is particularly confusing).

The ending is typical of the “getting the people to rise up and revolt against their invader masters” type of stories, complete with a way for the Doctor to be involved in the final moments.

Then it’s off on another journey.

Like most of the “normal” type of Big Finish adventures, this is a satisfactory listen.  I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily worth the £14.99 plus postage asking price, or the £10.99 download price but, if you can get it in a sale (as I did for £2.99 on download) then it’s definitely one I’d recommend – if only for William Russell, and a new adventure exploring the possibilities of the Voord.

After the adventure we get a trailer, plus a short word or two from those involved (with William Russell reaffirming to us, as if we didn’t know, that to him there is only really one Doctor – Bill).  There then follows a short music suite.
