Unlike the previous one-episode sub-stories, Ian’s trial continues well into the final episode. Presumably because there wasn’t much to the resolution, which is a pity because we come away learning so little about the Voord. At least the significance of the “fake key” worked well. Almost chekhov’s gun, but it does make you question what they would have done if there hadn’t been a fake key.
Despite learning that Marinus is supposed to be a rich and varied planet, only the Voord turn out to be the ones that don’t look human and who are keen to get their hands on Arbitan’s device.
Having self-contained episodes most weeks prevent this story from feeling dragged-out over the six weeks, but it also leaves us without any sense of grand epic that longer stories often benefit from.
Next time … The Temple of Evil
