This third version of the pilot episode of Doctor Who, at just 25 minutes long, is pretty much the same as the “raw” version except that it has some scenes reshot (to avoid the banging doors), and some that may have been edited (Barbara getting her coat trapped in the doorway, Susan fluffing the pop group going from “2 to 19”, etc). As such this would be the version Sydney Newman got to see before he had it remounted.
Most of what I said before still stands, although it doesn’t feel quite as epic as the longer/raw version. It loses the sense of the Doctor deflecting the interrogation (finding a piece of junk “I wonder why I didn’t see that before”) and of him having more important things on his mind (telling Susan that he’d found a replacement for the filament). But essentially all the rest is there.
I did pick up on a slight contradiction this time around. Before Susan announces that she’s from the 49th Century, she described Susan and Ian as “Earth people”. She wouldn’t have described them as such if she and the Doctor were “Earth people”, so there’s a bit of confusion here as to whether they’re from 49th Century Earth, or from some other planet (and, hence, are aliens).
Next time … The Cave of Skulls
